I’ve had quite a productive summer so far - in spite of the extreme heat at times it usually remains quite cool in the old barn that is my work space. In late Spring I finally got my little sailing boat launched and onto the mooring and spending time at the coast has inspired some ‘marsh’ studies. This may sound unappealing, but the diverse marshland areas on the North Norfolk coast are a thing of beauty, constantly changing with the shifting tides, progression of plant life, time of day and weather. I could paint these scenes for ever and constantly find new patterns of light and colour in these magical places between land and sea. I’m sharing a couple here:
Time and Tide 1, oil on canvas, 40cm x 30cm
Time and Tide 2, oil on canvas, 40cm x 30cm
Another sea study was inspired by a visit from a great friend, bearing gifts of large canvases! I started work on one of these without a clear idea of what I was intending, but found that I was painting a rocky Cornish scene. We met at an artists’ retreat in St Ives a couple of years ago and this must have been in the back of my mind when I began painting.
Untitled, oil on canvas, 80cm x 60cm
I love spending time in my garden, particularly in Spring and Summer, another constantly changing space and full of inspiration. I hope the resulting paintings evoke the sense of joy and calm I find here - they are an emotional response to my surroundings. I got some very large canvases for the latest ones and here are a couple of the results:
Profusion, oil on canvas, 1 metre x 1 metre
The Shape of Summer, oil on canvas, 1 metre x 75cm
I hope you enjoy the selection of work I’ve shared. These and others are drying out in my studio, so won’t be in my gallery for a while, if at all. If you are interested in any of these paintings or would like to come for a studio visit please do get in touch. lesleywilliamsartist@gmail.com
